How Does Drug Rehabilitation Center Works?

Addiction is one of the most common psychological and neurological diseases and, unfortunately, one of the most harmful.

As it develops and expresses itself in the behavior of the person, the freedom of the individual is being reduced, and his health is deteriorating due to a radical change of priorities: if nothing is done to avoid it, the satisfaction of the impulses generated by the addiction becomes, almost literally, the only thing that matters.

Faced with this reality, rehabilitation center works and treatment in addictions are essential support. These offer a context in which it is possible to overcome the most intense symptoms of addiction and significantly reduce the risk of relapse, gaining autonomy and quality of life.

In this article, we will see a summary of how a drug rehabilitation center works, with the main areas of work that support its way of treating patients.

These are the fundamental aspects that define the way in which detoxification and rehabilitation center works, assuming that they offer all the coverage of services related to this type of professional support to patients.

Outpatient support service

Although the image that many people have of what a rehabilitation and addiction treatment center is consists of a place where you have to remain admitted, the truth is that most organizations of this type also have an outpatient center, to which patients can go at specific times without having to stay to live in the facilities.

Outpatient addiction treatment without admission is an especially useful resource for people who have already started the rehabilitation phase and who have the autonomy to stay away from consumption or problematic behaviors (for example, gambling).

Entrance service

Income is another of the most useful and demanded services when it comes to fighting addictions. The professionals involved in the working of rehabilitation centers strive to ensure that they provide a comfortable environment with all the material and human resources necessary to support the well-being and health of people who resort to residential treatments.

Sometimes, these facilities are located in quiet and isolated places in areas where nature predominates, so that patients can enjoy a context away from the stress of large urban centers, and can also walk in the open air through the clinic gardens without exposing themselves to the risk of relapse.

On the other hand, another of the typical characteristics of the rehabilitation center works is that there is an important diversity of equipment that can be used by residents. The most complete centers have sports courts and gymnasiums, terraces, a library, a swimming pool, work areas, etc. The objective is that people can make a comfortable life in this place so that it is easier to manage and control the urge to relapse.

Psychiatric and medical support

The teams that manage the rehabilitation centers include health professionals from various areas of specialization to care for people with addiction problems, something necessary whether it’s drug addiction or any other sort of addiction (pathological gambling, dependence on video games, etc.). We have doctors, nurses, psychotherapists, etc.

Support for dual pathology

Addictions tend to overlap a lot with other psychological or psychiatric disorders, such as major depression, Borderline Personality Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and others. In these cases, what is usually called “dual pathology” appears.

For this reason, rehabilitation centers are not oblivious to the reality that for many patients, one of these psychopathologies can be as or more painful than the addiction itself, and treatments must be carried out for both problems.

Disability and rehabilitation services

The process by which addiction is overcome goes far beyond the detoxification phase. It is also essential to help patients to adopt the appropriate habits and the ability to create life contexts in which the risk of relapse is minimized.

Therefore, even when the person has not been admitted for a while, the possibility of following up the case is offered. It should not be forgotten that addictions that have already been consolidated and diagnosed, even when they are no longer in their worst phase, imply the need to constantly take care of themselves since their sequelae have a chronic component.

The fact of having spent time in the residential module of an addiction treatment center is not equivalent to a complete cure, since it is still necessary to be able to return to a way of life very different from the one that characterized the admission; Luckily, to make it easier to adapt, in the rehabilitation centers we support this process, both in-person and online.

How to choose the best rehabilitation center for your loved one?

My advice is the same whenever I am asked this question: do your research well before making any decisions.

Look for alternatives that have a good infrastructure, with wide green areas, specialized assistance 24 hours, a complete multidisciplinary team and other differences that you consider relevant.

It is also worth making a face-to-face visit to these places and talking with professionals to understand the approaches and procedures adopted at the clinic.

Then, yes, it is time to find out about the establishment’s prices and agreements.

Remember: trusting the method used and building a trusting relationship with the recovery team is an essential step in the process.

Otherwise, it is possible that family members end up moving away, which affects the patient’s rehabilitation.

What are the types of admission offered in a rehabilitation centers?

I know that the decision to place someone you love in a rehabilitation center is not an easy one.

However, it is necessary to consider the moment lived and see hospitalization as a way of providing the support that the person so badly needs.

Often, the person can deny and say that and it is overkill. But as difficult as it is, it is important to make the right choice.

Below, I present the three types of hospitalization and their specifications

Voluntary hospitalization

It is the ideal model, which occurs when the addict himself recognizes that he cannot abandon the addiction alone and, therefore, decides to seek help or allows other people to refer him to a hospital.

Involuntary hospitalization

In this type, hospitalization is performed by a third party, usually a family member, and without the consent of the dependent – hence the involuntary name.

The request can be made in a family consultation with the doctor, in which the case is narrated and the professional prepares a report, attesting the need to resort to this alternative.

Compulsory hospitalization

Here, the formal request for hospitalization is made by a judge. It does not depend on the authorization of family members and the patient.

The request takes into account a medical report, which certifies that the addict has no control over his physical and psychological abilities, representing a risk for himself and others.
